Types of Travel Insurance in India

Domestic travel insurance

As name suggests, domestic travel insurance is an insurance offered to customers for travel within India. It is a policy which guards the policy holder in case of problems while travelling. It provides coverage for medical emergencies during their travel, permanent disability and death, baggage loss, travel delay and personal liability. Any Indian citizen travelling within India can purchase domestic travel insurance. Foreigners, who have work permit to work in India, can also purchase Domestic Travel Insurance for travelling within India.

International travel insurance

Though it’s not mandatory, but it’s very important to buy International travel insurance before starting on a foreign trip for any purpose. It provides protection against unseen medical and non-medical emergencies during the trip. Any individual who is below 85 years of age needn't undergo the medical check-up for buying International Travel Insurance. It helps in being worry free on a foreign trip. These type of policy covers for medical expenses overseas, hijack, baggage and travel delays, repatriations/evacuation to India, and loss of travel documents/passport besides the usual coverage offered in normal travel insurance.

Individual travel insurance

This is an important policy to buy when you are travelling abroad alone. It offers various benefits along with normal benefits like Emergency medical expenses, Repatriation in case of medical emergency, Repatriation of mortal remains, any dental emergency expenses following an accident, Compensation following accidental injuries, Baggage Loss and other benefits.

Corporate travel insurance

Employees of any corporate or organization can get coverage for both domestic as well as international travel under Corporate travel insurance.

Student travel insurance

This is a policy for students who are travelling abroad for further studies. It offers comprehensive coverage in the form of expenses incurred on medical treatment, passport loss and other reasons leading to study interruptions.

Senior citizen travel insurance

This insurance caters to the age group of people between 61 and 70. It offers coverage for dental treatment and cashless hospitalization along with normal travel insurance coverage.

Family travel insurance

This is policy for entire family and the entire family is covered under one policy. It offers coverage for hospitalization, baggage loss, and other incidental expenses. Single trip Travel Insurance

This is typically suited for an occasional traveller, as the name suggests. The maximum coverage provided under this type of travel insurance policy do not exceed more than six month even as it might change from company to company. These types of plans are tailor made for businessman, individuals and families who want to travel overseas on special occasions. Most common covers offered under Single trip travel insurance plans are accidental death, emergency evacuation, medical expenses, disablement benefit, and delayed departure & baggage.

Multi trip Travel Insurance

Especially made for people who frequently travel overseas. Typical multi-trip travel insurance is valid for one year and the customer gets to choose from 30, 45, 60 and 90 days as the duration of their trip. This type of travel insurance policy helps the flier to save considerable money and time. As the flier has to pay the premium once and be covered for the entire trip irrespective of the number of trip he/she undertakes during the entire year when the policy is valid. Group travel insurance

Group travel insurance is an insurance plan that will cover a group of people who might or might not belong to the same family for their overseas or domestic trip. What is an ASP?

ASP stands for Assistance Service Provider. The most essential service they provide is cashless medical services. They also provide the necessary information to deal with any problem regarding claims.

In case medical treatment is required, is there any need for pre-approval before hospitalization?

You will need to contact our ASP and they will arrange for cashless claims for the medical treatment.

When does the cover begin and end?

You are covered from the start date of your trip or the policy start date. These will be confirmed on your policy schedule once the policy is purchased.

Is there any exclusion to the policy?

Yes. Some exclusions and conditions are specific to individual sections, while general exclusions and conditions apply to the policy overall. Please read the policy wordings carefully to ensure you have the cover you need.

If the customer returns home earlier than planned, can he/she get a partial refund on travel insurance?

Yes, we refund part of your premium if no claim has been made on any part of your policy and there are more than 30 days left from the expiry date.

What is the maximum trip length?

International travel cover can be purchased for 180 days at a time, and can be extended for another 180 days. This is subject to underwriting guidelines.

Are business travelers eligible to purchase a Travel Insurance policy?

Yes. Our travel insurance is designed for both leisure and business travelers. Business travelers who go abroad frequently can avail of multi-trip plans.

Does this policy cover Pre-existing diseases? Is there cover for pre-medical conditions like Diabetes?

Any claim due to or arising out of pre-existing medical condition/ailment whether declared or undeclared is not covered under the policy.

Is loss of passport covered under the policy?

Yes, passport loss is covered in the policy. It is covered under the benefit of ‘Loss of Baggage and Personal Documents’. The assistance provider helps in contacting the consular authorities in case of the loss or theft of an Insured Person’s passport, and arranging for its replacement.

What is covered under the benefit loss of checked baggage?

This benefit will reimburse the Insured Person the cost of replacement of the articles if the Checked in baggage or Personal documents are permanently damaged or lost.

Are ambulance charges covered under the policy?

Emergency Medical Expenses includes ambulance service (to or from the Hospital).

What does medical repatriation and evacuation cover?

Emergency Medical Evacuation means arrangement for transportation required to move an insured to the nearest hospital and Medical Repatriation means arrangement for transportation required to move an insured to his/her country of residence following an emergency.

What is benefit under hijack distress allowance?

If the Common Carrier in which the insured Person is aboard is hijacked, the company agrees to pay to the compensation for every six (6) continuous hours in excess of the Deductible.

How can I renew an existing policy being overseas if the stay is extended?

The plan can be renewed online by filling a form before 7-10 days of the expiry of coverage. We will get an approval from the concerned team for an extension of the policy within 24 hours. Travelers can initially buy the policy for 180 days and renew the same plan for another 180 days. Similarly students can buy the policy for one year and later renew the policy for the one more year.

What information do I need to complete the online application?

All the information required to complete the application is available in the applicants passport. The main data elements are the applicants complete name, passport number, date of birth, mailing address and telephone number in India, the assignee (the beneficiary for the policy in the event of death or dismemberment of the traveler) and the correct travel dates

What is the procedure to claim?

In case of inpatient hospitalization medical expenses the insured or their close ones should intimate the insurance company and give policy details. Insurance company will speak to the hospital and arrange for direct billing. In the event of outpatient medical, the claims procedure varies depending on the plan chosen.

In case I don't want the policy anymore, can I get it cancelled?

You can get your policy cancelled only if you have not undertaken the journey and you produce your passport as a proof that the journey has not been undertaken. Any such request of cancellation will be entertained up to 14 days after the first date of insurance as indicated in the schedule of the policy. In case of cancellation of your policy, a specified amount will be deducted as administration charges, from the refundable amount.

Would I be reimbursed for the medical expenses incurred abroad, if I go specifically for the purpose of seeking medical treatment?

The insurance covers you only for accidents or sickness which happen unexpectedly and unintentionally while you are traveling abroad.

Is there a free Look-in /look-in period available ?
